Pudd'n'head Wilson is a novel that was written by Mark Twain in the year 1894. This novel was set prior to the American Civil War in the town Dawson Landing, Missouri, next to the Mississippi River. The plot of Pudd'n'head is a detective story with switched idenities and solving the murder of the town's judge, The main character is Tom Driscoll a spoiled and ignorant young man that is the heir of his family fortune. Tom was switched at birth with chambers the original slave. The two at birth were identical because they came from the same father but different mothers. The slave mother Roxy of chambers decides that her baby would have a better life and might actually save it's life if she switched it with the masters son, Tom. The two grow up with Tom being as mean as possible to Chambers, because Chambers was better at everything. Tom was extremely jealous so he decided to be extra harsh to him while they were growing up. The two growing up though so much alike were totally different attitude wise. Tom was mean. ignorant, spoiled while Chambers was talented, nice, soft spoken, and kind. All these characteristics show through because the way the two were brought up. Tom had nearly no discipline while Chambers was the oppressed figure. Chambers comes out to be better than Tom because of there two different ways they are brought up and the two totally different societies.
The major conflict and point that Twain was getting across was with social issues of slavery and racial problems. Throughout the novel Tom makes friends and of course enemies. As Tom finds his true identity he has difficulty getting along with his mother and uncle throughout the story.
Mark Twain grew up in an America that was full of slavery. His experiences with slavery growing up shows in his novel. Twain throughout the book showed how slavery actually was, and how the hard it was to be African American in that time. This shows how America has changed from that point in time to the current America. As America has changed so has it's literature. But still Twain's words still come to life even today. This book was as clever and surprising in the end as the name of the book.
